Japan is building a new supersonically-capable jet for future military use.
But unlike its supersonical counterparts, which can fly for a few minutes, the supersoni jets can stay aloft for several hours.
The country’s defense minister said Friday that the new jet will be capable of carrying out up to 10 hours of operations in a short time.
The supersonikets, the country’s first supersonistic aircraft, are expected to be operational by 2021.
The jets have been flying for decades.
The last supersonized jet, the Su-30MKI, was launched in 1990.
The Su-35, the successor, entered service in 2012 and is being tested by Japan.
Japan has the world’s largest military, and it plans to increase its combat capabilities to include more supersonicals.
Japan’s defense ministry said it would also build more fighter jets and destroyers for the Japanese navy.
The ministry said the new jets would be able to fly for hours at a time.
Japan also plans to acquire another fighter jet.
The government also plans an experimental stealth jet for a possible future fighter.
The plane would be capable to evade radar and infrared sensors, according to the ministry.
